Online Play
To be able to play War of the Ring over the internet is a dream come true for many enthusiasts. Perhaps you don't have anyone to play with where you live or perhaps you want to play a friend you met on the internet.
Thanks to the great work of playtesters Sean McCarthy (a.k.a. SevenSpirits) and Andrew Poulter (a.k.a. GamesJart) this fabolus program for playing War of the Ring online is now available.
Enhanced Version Including the Battles of the Third Age
Andrew Poulter built upon Sean McCarthy's original program and has released an enhanced version that includes the Second Edition rule set,
the Collector's Edition version of the First Edition rule set, the Breaking of the Fellowship scenario, and the Rohan and Gondor scenarios from the Battles of the Third Age.
In addition to that each player's card hand is password protected to prevent cheating in tournament play. The latest version is available in three formats (all of which are compatible with eachother):
- English (requires Java 1.6)
- German (requires Java 1.6) - This version is not yet updated with the Second Edition rule set
- English for Java 1.5 (for users unable to run Java 1.6)
They are all available in the Downloads section.
If you do not have Java installed on your computer you can get it here.
Original War of the Ring Online Version
Sean McCarthy's original program (version 2.2, which is backwards compatible with versions 2.0 and 2.1) is available for download in
the Downloads section.
This version only includes the War of the Ring First Edition rule set with the expansion elements from Twilight of the Third Age.
Finding and Connecting to Other Players
The easiest ways to get in touch with someone to play is to try the following things:
If you have problems connecting to other players (especially if you are using a router) you can download and use Hamachi. It is a program that lets you set up a private Local Area Network between computers anywhere. The program assigns each computer
in the network an IP address that you use in the War of the Ring Online program to connect. You can download Hamachi from the Downloads section.
By logging in to a Hamachi Network you cen see which players are online, and chat with them directly through Hamachi. This makes setting up games very easy.
The War of the Ring online ladder uses the following "public" Hamachi Networks:
(each Hamachi network can only hold 15 users, so please don't create multiple logins on the same network)
- Network name: veldrinwotr - Password: veldrin
- Network name: veldrinwotr2 - Password: veldrin
- Network name: veldrinwotr3 - Password: veldrin
- Network name: veldrinwotr4 - Password: veldrin
Over at the Message Board you can get additional help with running the program, report bugs, and search for someone to play with.
