War of the Ring

Online Client 2.2

A program by Sean McCarthy (SevenSpirits)

War of the Ring Online Client is a free program for playing War of the Ring on the computer and over the internet. It does not know the rules of the game. Instead, it is like a virtual board that you can move pieces around on. With this program, you can play a full, real-time game against a distant opponent; you can save at any point and start up again later; and when you are finished, you can share the replay of your game with the War of the Ring community online.

Version 2.2 is completely backwards compatible with versions 2.0 and 2.1.

General Requirements
This program exists because it is notoriously difficult to play physical board games over intercontinental distances – and the War of the Ring community is exceedingly international. It is not meant to be a cheap replacement for actually owning the board game - such a product is not mine to give away! Therefore, you may not use this program unless you already own the board game. If you don't own it, just go out and buy it. Frankly, it's probably not worth the confusion you will suffer trying to play this program without reference components anyway. Thank you!

System Requirements
This program was written in Java 1.6, also known as Java 6. (This is different from version 1.1 and earlier, which only needed Java 1.5!) As such, it can be run on any computer that has the Java 6 Runtime Environment installed.

Note that you don't need the JDK (Java Development Kit); just the JRE. Unfortunately, Mac OS X does not yet support Java 1.6.

The client was written for 1024 x 768 screen resolution, although frankly it's nicer if you have a bigger screen so that you can resize the window and eliminate the need to scroll the map.
